On Palm Sunday, I got up early and arrived at Saint Peter’s two hours before the gates opened in hopes of getting a center-row seat for the Papal Mass in the Square. Since a couple friends joined me for the daybreak trek into the city, the wait did not seem that long and was finally rewarded with great seats. I also was given a seven-foot palm branch, which was among the hundreds given to those lining the center row. The excitement of the crowd and the waving palm and olive branches made the ceremony for me the closest thing yet to that first Palm Sunday.
